Dr. James Fitzgerald, a Brisbane resident for 36 years, welcomed me to his practice saying, “Smiles are important to everyone’s emotional and physical health. My goal is to provide personal care and help maintain optimal oral health for each person of all ages. As a dentist, I can preserve, enhance, and protect people’s teeth and smiles by providing preventative, restorative, implants, and cosmetic dentistry.” After graduating in 1980 as Senior Class President from UCSF School of Dentistry, he opened his dental practice in 1981 in the Brisbane Village Shopping Center. He explained why he chose Brisbane, saying, “The aesthetics and beauty of San Bruno Mountain, with the fog rolling over the mountain and the sunshine, are stunning and relaxing.” This is a family practice, with his wife Terri, and three daughters actively working in the dental office, alongside long-time Brisbane staff. Dr. Fitzgerald is active in Brisbane as a Brisbane Lion; recipient of the 1994 Citizen of the Year Award and Brisbane Chamber of Commerce past president and director emeritus.
I was introduced to Dr. Annie Suh, Dr. Fitzgerald’s dental associate, who graduated from Loma Linda School of Dentistry in 2011. I asked why she chose Brisbane to practice the art of dentistry. She replied, “I had the opportunity of helping out in Dr. Fitzgerald’s office for a few weeks. The office and I just clicked. A month later they asked me to join their dental practice! I was thrilled. I love Brisbane, its warmth and friendliness. I was impressed by the high standards that Dr. Fitzgerald sets for providing quality, holistic care for each of his patients. I knew that this was exactly the place I wanted to be. We have the same dental philosophy – ‘to be kind, considerate and honest.’” Dr. Suh continued, “I enjoy educating and assisting my patients to maintain a healthy smile. I like working in an atmosphere of respect and consideration towards each patient and staff. We are family. You can sense the comfort and ease in the office; they are sincerely educating and helping people maintain a healthy smile, no matter the age.”
As Dr. Fitzgerald and I toured the office, he spoke on the importance of providing a healthy environment to protect patients’ health. For example, instead of using amalgam to fill cavities (amalgam contains mercury), he uses porcelain or tooth colored resin material. He also has a Biolase water laser which allows him to fill small cavities without the use of anesthetic. He showed me his digital radiography device that captures digital images instead of the traditional photograph film, explaining how this cuts down radiation exposure to staff and patients. I saw three-dimensional (3D) imaging, where with a simple scan, he can see far more than what a two-dimensional x-ray can show. Dr. Fitzgerald commented, “ With a 3D scan we have the ability to answer clinical questions in a non-invasive way for our patients, so we have a greater range of diagnosing and treatment planning.”
In closing, Dr. Fitzgerald said, “As dental professionals, we stay up to date on the latest advancements in dentistry to provide the most current treatment options for our patients. We provide services such as a complete exam and cleaning, clear aligners for orthodontic treatment, a full-mouth restoration, and/or anything else in between, to provide patients with exceptional care as we enhance the natural beauty of smiles. We recognize and deeply appreciate that our patients place a great deal of trust in us and our team.”
