Walking into the newly remodeled DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton I was greeted with a complimentary bottle of water and a warm chocolate cookie! JD Smith, General Manager, came out to meet and escort me to his office. During the interview I commented on the hospitality of his reception staff; he replied with a simple thank you and to share the fact he wants every guest that walks through the doors to also have a memorable experience.”
We conversed about the history of DoubleTree and its tradition of welcoming all of their guests with a warm chocolate chip cookie. I learned that philanthropist Samuel F. Kitchell, in 1969, bought a motel and rebranded it the DoubleTree. His vision was to provide the ultimate experience for travelers while building relationships and community. He and his staff visited each room giving guests chocolate chip cookies and a glass of milk. Today DoubleTree is part of Hilton – it offers a guest reward program (Honors®) at more than 375 gateway cities, metropolitan areas and vacation destinations worldwide.
Smith graduated Magna Cum Laude from Arizona State with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and earned a second degree from the University of Utah in Political Science. I learned that Smith understands people and the importance of transparency. We spoke on the importance of listening and meeting, or exceeding, both guest and staff expectations.
Smith has received various awards for his management, community building and fiscal responsibility. He was nominated three times for “Convention Services Manager of the Year” by Successful Meetings Magazine and received DoubleTree’s prestigious CARE Award for Community Service. His working career as General Manager has included The Pointe Hilton Resorts, American Golf Corporation, Embassy Suites, DoubleTree Santa Monica and DoubleTree Del Mar.
We spoke about the Brisbane DoubleTree that features 210 rooms along with event facilities totaling 4,219 square feet for meetings, weddings and company parties. WhiteCaps Restaurant and Bar serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a vibrant lounge.
In conclusion Smith said, “Working with the Hilton brand reflects my core values in building business and community relations. I want to be an integral part of the local and corporate community.
