Please Recycle Right— Avoid the temptation to “wishcycle”

By Teresa Montgomery, Sustainability Manager, South San Francisco Scavenger Company

The term “wishcycle” is defined as “tossing questionable items in the recycling bin, hoping they can somehow be recycled.” While often having the best intentions, people who wishcycle are driving up waste processing costs and causing more (not less) material to be sent to landfill.
In July, South San Francisco Scavenger mailed a Service Guide to every single-family home in Brisbane. The Guide provides waste reduction tips, instructions for proper sorting and set-out of materials, and more. Similar Guides are available for local businesses and tenants of multifamily residential complexes. Please visit www.ssfscavenger.com/recycling-crisis to access printer-friendly versions of all available guides.
Thank you for taking the time to learn what is allowed in our recycling program and to sort smart!
