Providing quality building products across Northern California for large and small construction projects with nine locations to serve the entire Bay Area, family-owned Golden State Lumber, became an integral partner with Brisbane in 1998. Golden State Lumber actively supports education, the Boys and Girls Club, and the Brisbane Chamber of Commerce. They donate the lumber for Brisbane’s wood frame stars, a tradition that has given Brisbane its nickname, “The City of Stars.” Within the company, they promote wellness initiatives. This month’s focus is breast cancer awareness, employees are wearing and giving away pink t-shirts on Friday, and next month they will focus on prostate cancer.
Tamara Palmer Heath, Director of Financial Operations, said, “Brisbane is a fabulous location for a lumber yard. We are close to the freeway allowing for easy daily deliveries to locations in the City of San Francisco. This is critical because in San Francisco there is generally not much room
to store building materials on site.”
The Brisbane lumber yard serves the building material needs for contractors and homeowners. They provide a full line of building materials, lumber, engineered lumber, hardware, interior moldings, windows, doors, decking, siding, as well as milling services. Golden State Lumber also specializes in windows and doors and has three upscale design showrooms located in San Francisco, Berkeley and Santa Rosa, in addition to lumber yard locations in Stockton, Concord, Newark, Brisbane, Santa Rosa and San Rafael. They offer the expertise to assist their clients in getting the job done right, no matter the size.
I mentioned to Tamara that I noticed the friendliness of the staff when I drove into the lumber yard and whilst in the store. Tamara said “yes, that is the Golden State of Mind, GSL One.” I asked her to elaborate and she explained, “Our business motto is (1) Do the right thing even when no one is looking; (2) Focus on the customer and good things will follow; (3) Communication brings clarity; and (4) Optimism is contagious. When serving our customers, our goal is to help our customers succeed. It’s what we are about.”
She stressed that the Golden State of Mind core value applies to both customers and employees alike. I learned that Golden State Lumber has ranked in the top 5 San Francisco Business Times Best Places to work for four years in a row. Tamara said, “We wouldn’t be here today without the care that employees give to our customers. The guiding principle of GSL One applies to both clients and employees. We have barbecues, potlucks and fresh coffee for our customers. Employees take care of the company and the customers. Our employees are fabulous. We are pet-friendly. We are a family; this is a home away from home for both employees and customers. We definitely have fun together.”
