Blue Line Transfer, Inc. (BLT) is preparing for the installation of new recycling and mixed waste processing equipment. Work will begin next week and be completed the week of November 23, 2020. During this time, waste materials will continue to be accepted as usual.
Recyclables that would normally be processed on BLT’s sort lines will be transported to other Bay Area facilities.
Current processing equipment has been in place for more than a decade and includes two picking lines: one designed to sort fiber (paper) and mixed waste materials, and the other used to sort containers (bottles, cans, jars, and tubs for example). Both lines depend heavily on manual labor.
Aging processing components will be replaced with modern equipment that will improve efficiency and overall recovery. The new components will be installed in-line with the current layout. Key features include an enhanced infeed system that will efficiently meter sorting material, a series of optical sorting machines for the processing of fibers, and the introduction of robotic sorting technology for the recovery of containers. For purposes of quality control, personnel will be positioned along the picking line to ensure quality via a manual sort.
Efforts will be made to prevent any delays or inconveniences to BLT customers. Should any occur, patience and understanding are requested. The scheduled improvements are essential and will help surrounding communities to reach the landfill reduction goals set by the state.
