TRASH TALK

With Chamber Member Teresa Montgomery, Sustainability Manager, South San Francisco Scavenger Company, info@ssfscavenger.com

Q: How should I handle bbq and fireplace ash?
A: Handle with care! Place in a metal container with tight fitting lid. Put container outside and at least 10 feet away from your home and combustibles. Wet the ashes down. Once cold, ashes should be bagged, boxed or otherwise securely contained before being placed in your garbage cart.
Q: What is the best way to clean my green cart?
A: We recommend wiping down your cart as needed. Use a damp piece of newspaper or paper towel and toss it inside the cart when you are done. Or, better yet, use a towel or fabric scrap that can be washed and reused. To periodically clean out the hard-to-reach portions of the cart, wait until it is empty and then carefully tip it on its side over a landscaped area. Rinse lightly, drain, set upright, and let dry with lid open. Before re-loading, put a few pieces of newspaper or a piece of cardboard at the bottom of the cart. It also helps to:
Layer kitchen scraps with yard trimmings (dry leaves really help absorb moisture and are plentiful this time of year!).
Wrap juicy items in paper before placing inside the cart.
Sprinkle sawdust or baking powder in your cart.
Keep the lid to your cart closed.
